In preliminary studies we unraveled that exposure to a plant-based volatile organic compound (VOC) improves metabolism and increases energy expenditure in humans with obesity. This project will investigate how the identified VOC affects thermogenesis in adipocytes and adipose tissue via direct and indirect pathways. Specifically, we will investigate the sympathetic nervous system as a mediator between the central nervous-system and the brown adipose tissue (BAT).
