Brown and beige adipocytes exhibit high de novo lipogenesis (DNL), the synthesis of endogenous fatty acids. The reasons for high DNL capacity in thermogenic adipose tissues are unknown. We have found that carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP) controls DNL enzymes in brown adipocytes. In this project, we want to explore how ChREBP isoforms regulate DNL and other cellular functions in thermogenic adipose tissue. Furthermore, we aim to identify mechanisms linking DNL to adaptive thermogenesis.
